English Language Learners (ELL) at George Junior Republic follow the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s ELL/English Proficiency Standards. These standards include the communication of information, ideas and concepts necessary for academic success in the content areas of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, as well as for social and instructional purposes within the school setting. A Pennsylvania Certified ELL teacher and an instructional aide implement the program. Class size is generally small, to ensure that each student receives the individual attention he needs. Each day, students concentrate on reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills for two and one-half hours. Additionally, individualized reading, group reading, grammar skills, and PSSA writing are emphasized. Along with various ELL computer websites, nationally recognized computer-based reading and writing programs are utilized. Finally, the program teaches social skills and life skills. The last part of every school day is resource-based, so students may receive help on homework, practice vocabulary for content classes, and study for tests. Some of the countries that have been represented in George Junior Republic’s ELL program include, Azerbaijan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, and the Dominican Republic. |
